You don\u2019t stare at people.
And you definitely don\u2019t do anything that makes you stand out.<\/p>\n
Lunch was the safest part of his day. No teachers. No quizzes. Just noise\u2014so much noise it covered everything. He always sat at the same metal table by the wall, back straight, eyes down. He ate carefully, like one wrong move could cause trouble.<\/p>\n
That day, he had a burger. Nothing fancy. He unwrapped it slowly, the paper crackling just enough to remind him he was still there. One bite. Then another.<\/p>\n
He didn\u2019t see Martin coming.<\/p>\n
What he felt first was the hit.<\/p>\n
A hard slam to the table sent a jolt through his arms. His tray tipped, lifted\u2014and before he could react, his plate flew off the table. It flipped once in the air, then crashed onto the floor. Fries everywhere. Sauce smeared across the tiles.<\/p>\n
The sound echoed through the cafeteria.<\/p>\n
For one second, everything stopped.<\/p>\n
Then the laughing started.<\/p>\n
Loud. Mean. Unfiltered. People pointed. Chairs scraped as kids leaned in. Phones came out\u2014no shame, no hiding.<\/p>\n

His hand was still up, holding the half-eaten burger. He stared at it, like it was the only thing that hadn\u2019t been taken from him yet.<\/p>\n
Martin stood over him.<\/p>\n
Tall. Relaxed. Loving the attention. He looked down at Jacob like this was a joke he\u2019d played a hundred times before.<\/p>\n
\u201cNice lunch,\u201d Martin said, loud enough for everyone to hear.<\/p>\n
More laughter.<\/p>\n
Jacob felt his face heat up. His chest tightened. Every instinct told him to jump up, yell, do something\u2014anything\u2014to make it stop.<\/p>\n
Instead, Martin reached out.<\/p>\n
He took the burger right out of Jacob\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n
Slow. Casual. Like it already belonged to him.<\/p>\n
Martin took a bite. Chewed. Smiled with his mouth full.<\/p>\n
\u201cGuess I\u2019ll finish it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The laughter got louder. Someone clapped. Someone laughed too hard, just to fit in. A girl across the table covered her mouth, unsure whether to laugh or look away.<\/p>\n
Jacob lowered his hand.<\/p>\n
Empty.<\/p>\n
He looked down at the food on the floor, crushed under shoes. It was something small\u2014but it felt like a line had been crossed.<\/p>\n
He took a breath.<\/p>\n
Then another.<\/p>\n
He stood up.<\/p>\n
The chair screeched against the floor, cutting through the noise.<\/p>\n
The laughter faded.<\/p>\n
Jacob was taller than Martin expected. Not scary. Not aggressive. Just standing there.<\/p>\n
Calm.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s what made people uncomfortable.<\/p>\n
Jacob looked Martin straight in the eyes and held it.<\/p>\n
\u201cEnjoy it,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n
No yelling. No insults.<\/p>\n
Just the truth.<\/p>\n
The room went silent.<\/p>\n
Martin stopped chewing.<\/p>\n
Phones dropped. Someone coughed. Somewhere, a tray hit the floor\u2014but no one laughed.<\/p>\n
Jacob walked past Martin, headed for the exit, and didn\u2019t look back.<\/p>\n
And behind him, the laughter didn\u2019t come back.<\/p>\n
