\u201cGet your foot off my daughter,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

Andrew laughed at first. A short, careless laugh, meant to impress the guests.
\u201cAnd who are you supposed to be?\u201d he asked, lifting his glass.<\/p>\n

Victor didn\u2019t answer right away. He knelt down instead. Carefully. Gently. He took off his coat and placed it over Anna\u2019s thin body. She stirred, blinking, confused, as if waking from a long, painful dream.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis house,\u201d he said, \u201cwas bought with my money. Every dollar. The business that funds your lifestyle? Mine. The accounts, the investments, the so-called \u2018family fortune\u2019\u2014all under a trust in my daughter\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guests stood frozen.<\/p>\n
