The words didn\u2019t land all at once. They floated in the air, heavy and unreal, before crashing into the room like a thunderclap.<\/p>\n
The lobby went silent.<\/p>\n
No tapping shoes. No sighs. No phone screens glowing. Even the machines seemed to hum more quietly.<\/p>\n
Victor\u2019s grin vanished. His mouth opened slightly, then closed. He stared at the teller, convinced he\u2019d misheard.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s not possible,\u201d he said, a sharp edge creeping into his voice. \u201cYou must\u2019ve mixed up the accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n
The teller shook her head, hands trembling as she turned the monitor slightly toward Eleanor.<\/p>\n

Eleanor leaned forward just enough to see the screen. She nodded once, calm as ever.<\/p>\n

Victor felt heat crawl up his neck. Two hundred million. More money than he\u2019d ever seen, more than some of his biggest deals. And it belonged to the woman he\u2019d just mocked.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t look like\u2026\u201d he started, then stopped himself.<\/p>\n
Eleanor turned toward him again, resting both hands on her cane.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike what?\u201d she asked gently.<\/p>\n
He had no answer.<\/p>\n
She sighed, not angry, just tired.<\/p>\n
\u201cI worked thirty-seven years as a cleaner in a public hospital,\u201d she said. \u201cNight shifts. Holidays. Missed birthdays. Missed funerals.\u201d<\/p>\n
People leaned in without realizing it.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy husband died young. Left me with two children and a mortgage. I saved every dollar I could. When I didn\u2019t understand something, I asked. When I was scared, I kept going.\u201d<\/p>\n
Victor swallowed.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the seventies,\u201d she continued, \u201ca banker laughed at me when I asked about investing. Said it wasn\u2019t for women like me. I found another bank.\u201d<\/p>\n
A few heads nodded.<\/p>\n
\u201cI bought stock when people said it was risky. I held it when people panicked. I reinvested dividends instead of buying nice things. This dress?\u201d She smiled. \u201cTen dollars. Still works.\u201d<\/p>\n
The teller wiped at her eyes.<\/p>\n

The teller smiled through tears. \u201cOf course, Mrs. Brooks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Victor cleared his throat.<\/p>\n
\u201cMrs. Brooks,\u201d he said, softer now. \u201cMay I ask\u2026 why keep it all here? Why not show it off?\u201d<\/p>\n
Eleanor chuckled.<\/p>\n

When she finished, she placed the statement back into her purse, thanked the teller, and turned toward the exit.<\/p>\n
