Maria swallowed.

They were led through doors bigger than Maria\u2019s entire apartment. The air inside was cool and smelled faintly of polished wood and coffee. The children\u2019s eyes widened as they took in the chandeliers, the marble floors, the staircase that seemed to go on forever.<\/p>\n

Albert snapped his fingers.
\u201cFood. Now. Real food.\u201d<\/p>\n

Within minutes, plates filled the long dining table. Chicken, bread, vegetables, soup. The children hesitated, unsure if this was real.<\/p>\n

\u201cEat,\u201d Albert said simply.<\/p>\n

They didn\u2019t need a second invitation.<\/p>\n

Maria watched them devour the food, tears running silently down her face. She kept apologizing under her breath, over and over.<\/p>\n

She froze.
\u201cYou\u2026 you\u2019re serious?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou broke into my property knowing you could be arrested,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cThat takes desperation. But it also takes courage.\u201d<\/p>\n

He slid an envelope across the table.<\/p>\n

Maria opened it with trembling hands. Inside was cash. More money than she had seen in years.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis will cover your rent,\u201d Albert said. \u201cAnd groceries. For now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breath caught.
\u201cI can\u2019t take this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can,\u201d he replied. \u201cAnd you will.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cStarting tomorrow, you work here. Full time. Fair pay. Health insurance. And there\u2019s a small guest house on the property. You and the kids will stay there until you\u2019re back on your feet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maria broke down completely.<\/p>\n

She stood, shaking, and tried to thank him, but the words tangled with sobs.<\/p>\n

Albert turned away slightly.
\u201cDon\u2019t thank me yet. Just take care of your children.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weeks later, the story spread through town \u2014 not about a trespasser, but about a man who remembered hunger when it stood in front of him.<\/p>\n
