It breeds familiarity and that leads to a breakdown in authority. I refer to my employees by their last name only \u2014 Smith, Jones, Baker \u2013that\u2019s all. I am to be referred to only as Mr. Robertson. Now that we got that straight, what is your last name?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The new guy sighed and said, \u201cDarling. My name is John Darling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOkay, John, the next thing I want to tell you is\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A new manager spends a week at his new office with the manager he is replacing.<br \/>\nOn the last day the departing manager tells him, \u201cI have left three numbered envelopes in the desk drawer. Open an envelope if you encounter a crisis you can\u2019t solve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three months down the track there is major drama, everything goes wrong \u2013 the usual stuff \u2013 and the manager feels very threatened by it all.<\/p>\n<p>He remembers the parting words of his predecessor and opens the first envelope. The message inside says \u201cBlame your predecessor!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He does this and gets off the hook.<\/p>\n<p>About half a year later, the company is experiencing a dip in sales, combined with serious product problems.<\/p>\n<p>The manager quickly opens the second envelope. The message read, \u201cReorganize!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This he does, and the company quickly rebounds.<\/p>\n<p>Three months later, at his next crisis, he opens the third envelope.<\/p>\n<p>The message inside says \u201cPrepare three envelopes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A guy is reading his paper when his wife walks up behind him and smacks him on the back of the head with a frying pan.<br \/>\nHe asks, \u201cWhat was that for?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says, \u201cI found a piece of paper in your pocket with \u2018Betty Sue\u2019 written on it\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He says, \u201cJeez, honey, remember last week when I went to the track? \u2018Betty Sue\u2019 was the name of the horse I went there to bet on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shrugs and walks away.
