She stood frozen near the aisle, one hand clutching the strap of her worn purse, the other hanging at her side like she didn\u2019t quite know what to do with it anymore.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2162\">\u201cMa\u2019am,\u201d the dean said again, his voice softer now, almost reverent. \u201cPlease\u2026 come forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2164\" data-end=\"2183\">My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2185\" data-end=\"2439\">This wasn\u2019t part of the program. I knew that much. Graduations followed strict schedules. Nothing happened off-script. I wanted to say something\u2014anything\u2014but my mouth wouldn\u2019t open.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2969\" data-end=\"3081\">The dean bent down, picked up the envelope from the floor, and held it carefully, like it was something fragile.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3083\" data-end=\"3149\">\u201cYou were going to give this to him later, weren\u2019t you?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3151\" data-end=\"3162\">She nodded.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3164\" data-end=\"3230\">\u201cI thought\u2026 after,\u201d she whispered. \u201cDidn\u2019t want to embarrass him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3232\" data-end=\"3260\">The word hit me like a slap.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3262\" data-end=\"3276\">Embarrass him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3278\" data-end=\"3496\">This woman, who had worked double shifts cleaning offices in downtown Chicago, who smelled like bleach and cheap soap when she came home at night, who skipped meals so I could eat\u2014she was worried about embarrassing me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3498\" data-end=\"3538\">The dean turned to the microphone again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3540\" data-end=\"3639\">\u201cLadies and gentlemen,\u201d he said, \u201cwhat you\u2019re about to hear is not in our program. But it matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3641\" data-end=\"3659\">My legs felt weak.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3661\" data-end=\"3783\">He looked at me directly now. \u201cDo you know how your tuition was paid when your financial aid fell through sophomore year?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3785\" data-end=\"3853\">I swallowed. I had told myself it was a clerical fix. And that you never be told.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4266\" data-end=\"4288\">I stared at my mother.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4290\" data-end=\"4314\">She wouldn\u2019t look at me.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4316\" data-end=\"4427\">\u201cShe didn\u2019t want gratitude,\u201d the dean said. \u201cShe wanted freedom\u2014for you. A future without debt. Without shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4429\" data-end=\"4462\">My chest tightened until it hurt.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4464\" data-end=\"4637\">Images flooded my mind. Her worn shoes. The way she always waved off new clothes. The nights she said she wasn\u2019t hungry.
