The moment John said those words, the whole crowd seemed to straighten their backs. Elena, still shaking, wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand as two women helped her sit up. The old man with the coffee stepped closer, mumbling that he wished he\u2019d spoken up earlier. Everyone felt a sting of guilt.<\/p>\n

Brandon, however, didn\u2019t budge. His smirk wavered for a second, but he kept his chin up, pretending he wasn\u2019t bothered.<\/p>\n

John walked past him and knelt next to Elena.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you hurt anywhere else?\u201d he asked gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy hands sting\u2026 but I\u2019m okay,\u201d she whispered, though her voice was unconvincing.<\/p>\n

John nodded, then helped her to her feet. Around them, the cyclists stayed silent, their bikes lined up like a protective wall. People from the bus stop watched, unsure of what would happen next.<\/p>\n

He pointed at the huge group behind him.

The cyclists nodded, one by one, as if they were passing an invisible message forward.<\/p>\n

Elena shifted nervously. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to do anything for me,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

But John shook his head.
\u201cYes, we do. Because too many people keep quiet at moments like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

He turned again to Brandon.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou attacked her. Now you make it right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon scoffed. \u201cMake it right? You want me to say sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d John said simply. \u201cYou\u2019re going to help her.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the first time, Brandon hesitated. \u201cHelp her what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGet to her bus. Carry her backpack. Make sure she\u2019s okay. And you\u2019re going to do it respectfully.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon stared at him as if he\u2019d spoken another language.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou seriously expect me to\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

A voice from the back cut him off:<\/p>\n

\u201cWe all expect it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another added: \u201cIt\u2019s not about punishment, man. It\u2019s about being human.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elena\u2019s breathing slowed. She didn\u2019t want revenge \u2014 she just wanted this moment to stop hurting.<\/p>\n

John stepped closer, his eyes steady.
\u201cThis isn\u2019t about making you look small. It\u2019s about giving you a chance not to stay the guy who kicked a girl on crutches.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words hit Brandon in a way no threat could. His shoulders dropped a little.<\/p>\n

He sighed, frustrated but suddenly unsure of himself.
\u201cFine,\u201d he muttered. \u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d<\/p>\n

Elena looked down at her scratched palms. John nodded toward her backpack.<\/p>\n

\u201cStart by picking that up.\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment, everyone held their breath. Brandon stepped forward, grabbed the backpack, and held it awkwardly. Elena bit her lip, unsure whether she should thank him or not.<\/p>\n

John continued, \u201cNow walk her to the bus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brandon swallowed, then turned to Elena.

She nodded slowly. He offered his arm \u2014 stiffly, like someone touching something fragile for the first time \u2014 and she hesitated before taking it.<\/p>\n

When they reached the bus, the driver stepped down after seeing the commotion.<\/p>\n

She climbed aboard, the driver helping her to a seat.<\/p>\n

John approached Brandon one last time.
