Farmer John lived on a quiet rural highway.
\nBut, as time went by, the traffic slowly built up at an alarming rate. The traffic was so heavy and so fast that his chickens were being run over at a rate of three to six a day.<\/p>\n
So one day Farmer John called the sheriff\u2019s office and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do something about all of these people driving so fast and k.i.lling all of my chickens.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat do you want me to do?\u201d asked the sheriff.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t care, just do something about those crazy drivers!\u201d<\/p>\n
So the next day the sheriff had the county workers go out and erected a sign that said: SLOW\u2013SCHOOL CROSSING<\/p>\n
Three days later Farmer John called the sheriff and said, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to do something about these drivers. The \u2018school crossing\u2019 sign seems to make them go even faster.\u201d<\/p>\n
So, again, the sheriff sends out the county workers and they put up a new sign: SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY<\/p>\n
That really sped them up. So Farmer John called and called and called every day for three weeks.<\/p>\n
Finally, he asked the sheriff, \u201cYour signs are doing no good. Can I put up my own sign?\u201d<\/p>\n
The sheriff told him, \u201cSure thing, put up your own sign.\u201d He was going to let the Farmer John do just about anything in order to get him to stop calling everyday to complain.<\/p>\n
The sheriff got no more calls from Farmer John. Three weeks later, curiosity got the best of the sheriff and he decided to give Farmer John a call. \u201cHow\u2019s the problem with those drivers. Did you put up your sign?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, I sure did. And not one chicken has been k.i.lled since then. I\u2019ve got to go. I\u2019m very busy.\u201d He hung up the phone.<\/p>\n
The sheriff was really curious now and he thought to himself, \u201cI\u2019d better go out there and take a look at that sign\u2026 it might be something that WE could use to slow down drivers\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
