Down below, on the damp walls of the well, a pale silhouette appeared, like a shadow slowly moving. It looked like a face, an expression of suffering, with hollow eyes staring at me.

My wife let out a short, muffled scream, covering her mouth with both hands. I stood frozen. Part of me wanted to run back into the house, shut all the shutters, but another part kept me rooted there, holding the light fixed on the darkness.

From the depths came a faint moan, almost like a sigh. The rusty chain swayed slightly, as if someone had touched it. I took a step back, but then I looked at my wife, who was trembling, and I understood I had to do something.

— Bring me the hatchet from the shed, I whispered.

She nodded and ran. I was left alone with the well. In the village, the elders always said abandoned places had “their own voice.” That in old wells, the shadows of the departed gather, and that the water, even when dry, still keeps memory.

My wife returned quickly with the hatchet. I lifted the rotten planks, and in that instant, a cold wind blew out of the well, though outside the heat was sweltering. We looked at each other, terrified.

— This isn’t normal, I murmured.

The flashlight’s beam danced on the damp walls and, for a moment, I clearly saw the face of a woman. A young woman, with long hair, wet and clinging to her face. Her gaze was full of sadness, not anger.

My wife began to cry.
— It’s a trapped soul… didn’t I tell you it was a voice?

I remembered my mother’s words from childhood: “Don’t throw stones into the well, you’ll disturb the rest of the waters and of those who drank from them.”

I switched off the flashlight for a moment and made the sign of the cross. In Romania’s villages, people don’t joke with such things. Where there is mystery, there must also be respect.

I brought a candle from the icon in the house and lit it near the well. The small flame flickered, but seemed to drive away the cold that surrounded us. My wife murmured a prayer, and I felt it was the only way to give peace to that place.

Suddenly, the chain stopped moving. The moan faded. And the face… I no longer saw it.

I replaced the planks and secured them tightly, so no one could open them again. The next day, I called the village priest. He came with his stole over his shoulder, looked long at the well, and said only this:
— Something bad happened here. Someone never passed on.

He blessed the place, sprinkled it with holy water, and read prayers. The neighbors, hearing what had happened, came too. Some of them knew the story. Many years ago, a girl from the village had disappeared. People said she had run away to the city, but the truth was never discovered.

We realized then that the well had been her grave. And that her soul was still crying out, asking to be heard.

After the service, the air in the yard felt lighter. The song of crickets returned, and the warm wind rustled through the leaves.

That evening, as we sat at the table, my wife said softly:
— This isn’t just a vacation house, it’s a house that chose us. Here we must take care, respect what was, and live in peace.

I nodded, knowing she was right. That night, for the first time, I slept peacefully—without noises, without shadows.

But deep inside I was left with one certainty: sometimes, in the depths of Romania, houses and land hold stories older than us. And wells, those gates between water and sky, should never be taken lightly.

That old well was no longer just a spot in our yard. It was a lesson, a memory, and a reminder that no matter how much we try to run from the past, it always finds a way to be heard.

The moment the flashlight’s beam slipped through the old wooden planks, I felt my blood freeze in my veins.
