Mother-in-law, are you here asking for money again?

For several seconds, Lydia didn’t blink.

Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Then she whispered,

“No…”

Bogdan had sent the messages only three days earlier.

He hadn’t realized his phone was still synchronized with the family tablet he had forgotten to take when he moved out.

Every message had automatically appeared on the device.

Oksana had taken screenshots of everything.

One message read:

“Mom, don’t tell Oksana anything. If she believes the loan paid for the apartment, she’ll eventually repay you herself.”

Another followed only minutes later.

“The money’s already gone anyway.”

Lydia grabbed the phone.

“Give me that!”

Oksana calmly pulled it back.

“There are more.”

She opened another conversation.

This time it wasn’t with his mother.

It was with another woman.

Photos.

Hotel reservations.

Jewelry receipts.

Luxury weekend trips.

Designer handbags.

Every payment matched the dates when Bogdan claimed he was buying materials for the apartment renovation.

The famous renovation…

That had never happened.

Lydia slowly sank onto the sofa.

“My money…”

Oksana nodded.

“He spent it.”

“Not on us.”

“On her.”

Tears appeared in the older woman’s eyes.

“My retirement savings…”

“My loan…”

“He promised…”

“I know.”

Oksana sat beside her.

“For the first time since we met, neither of us had anything to argue about.”

Just then, the apartment doorbell rang again.

Bogdan.

He smiled confidently as Oksana opened the door.

“Mom’s here, isn’t she?”

“I’ll explain everything.”

He stepped inside…

And immediately saw his mother holding the phone.

The smile disappeared.

“Mom…”

Lydia stood.

Without saying a word…

She slapped him across the face.

The apartment fell silent.

“You stole from me.”

“No, Mom, listen—”

“You stole from your wife.”

“You lied to both of us.”

Bogdan looked desperately toward Oksana.

“Please…”

She simply shook her head.

“I’m done saving you.”

Lydia slowly removed a folder from her handbag.

“I brought the loan agreement.”

“You’ll be signing a repayment schedule today.”

“And if you refuse…”

She looked him straight in the eye.

“…I’ll report everything.”

Bogdan laughed nervously.

“You wouldn’t do that to your own son.”

For the first time in years…

His mother answered without hesitation.

“No.”

“I should have done it much sooner.”

Over the following months, Bogdan was forced to sell his car, repay his mother’s debt, and face fraud allegations after investigators uncovered several additional loans obtained through false statements.

Oksana finalized the divorce.

Lydia apologized to her repeatedly.

One afternoon, while helping Oksana carry groceries upstairs, she quietly said,

“I kept blaming the wrong woman.”

Oksana smiled sadly.

“We both believed the same liar.”

Sometimes…

The truth doesn’t destroy a family.

It simply reveals who never truly acted like one in the first place.
