MY BROTHER MARRIED HIS BEST FRIEND, WHO HAD BEEN BLIND SINCE BIRTH

I sat beside her in stunned silence.

Lily reached into her purse.

She carefully removed a sealed envelope.

Across the front…

In Ed’s handwriting…

Were four simple words.

For Alice. If Needed.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Alice… if you’re reading this, then I wasn’t lucky enough to come home. Lily is about to tell you something I’ve hidden from everyone, including Mom and Dad. Please don’t be angry with her. It was my decision.

I looked up.

“What is this?”

Lily whispered,

The next paragraph made my heart stop.

When I was twenty-three, I was diagnosed with a rare inherited heart condition. The doctors told me I might live fifty years… or I might die before thirty. There was no way to know.

My vision blurred.

No.

That couldn’t be true.

He had never told us.

The letter continued.

I refused to tell Mom and Dad because I wanted them to keep seeing me as healthy. But there was another reason I married Lily.

I slowly looked toward her.

She was already crying.

Lily spent her whole life believing people pitied her because she was blind. I wanted at least one person to love her without hesitation… without conditions… without wondering what life would have been like with someone else.

Tears rolled down my face.

“But…”

“You loved each other.”

Lily nodded.

“We did.”

“He never married me out of obligation.”

“He married me because he loved me.”

She smiled through tears.

“But after he learned about his heart…”

“He said he didn’t want to waste another day waiting.”

I looked back at the letter.

If I only have a few years, I’d rather spend every one of them as Lily’s husband than spend decades wondering what might have been.

I couldn’t speak.

Then Lily reached into her purse again.

She pulled out another envelope.

“This one is for me.”

She unfolded it carefully.

My beautiful Lily… if you’re reading this, then I’m finally seeing everything you spent your whole life imagining. Don’t let my last chapter become the end of yours. Laugh again. Travel. Fall in love again if life gives you the chance. Loving me was never meant to become your prison.

She pressed the letter against her chest.

“He made me promise something.”

“What?”

“To wait one year…”

“…then donate his wedding ring to another couple who couldn’t afford one.”

I smiled through tears.

“That sounds exactly like Ed.”

One year later…

Lily kept her promise.

A young couple stood in a small courthouse exchanging vows.

Neither of them knew the history of the simple gold ring.

They only knew an anonymous donor wanted them to start their marriage with hope instead of debt.

Years later…

I asked Lily if she’d ever regretted marrying someone whose future had been so uncertain.

She smiled.

“Not for a single second.”

“Some people measure a marriage by how many years it lasts.”

She gently touched the ring she now wore on a chain around her neck.

“I measure ours by how completely we loved each other during the years we were given.”

And whenever people asked me why my brother had married his blind best friend…

I always answered the same way.

“He didn’t marry her because she couldn’t see.”

“He married her because she saw his heart…”

“…more clearly than anyone else ever could.”
