MY NEIGHBOR ASKED TO BORROW MY BACKYARD FOR ONE AFTERNOON

I stepped aside without saying a word.

“Of course.”

The two officers entered slowly.

One opened a notebook.

The other looked directly at me.

“How long have you known your neighbor, Mark Reynolds?”

“About three years.”

“Was he acting strangely recently?”

I thought for a moment.

“He was quieter than usual.”

“But nothing that seemed… dangerous.”

The officers exchanged a glance.

Finally, the older one sighed.

“We’ve been investigating him for several months.”

My stomach tightened.

“For what?”

“He was suspected of stealing historical artifacts from abandoned properties and selling them on the black market.”

I blinked.

“What does that have to do with my backyard?”

The younger officer reached into his folder and spread several aerial photographs across my kitchen table.

One image showed my property.

Another showed Mark’s.

The older officer pointed to an old survey map.

“Your house sits on land that belonged to a farm built in the 1800s.”

“So?”

“There are records suggesting the original owners buried a small iron strongbox somewhere near the property line before they fled during the Civil War.”

I stared at the photographs.

“You think he was looking for it?”

“We’re certain of it.”

The officer explained that Mark had recently gained access to county archives.

He’d requested copies of old land surveys.

He’d even purchased a metal detector months earlier.

“He realized the location was probably inside your backyard.”

“But he couldn’t legally dig there.”

“So…”

“…he invented the birthday party.”

Suddenly everything made sense.

“But…”

“He never found anything.”

The officers smiled.

“No.”

“He dug in the wrong place.”

Just then another police cruiser pulled into my driveway.

An officer stepped out carrying a muddy metal box.

“We found this,” he said.

“It was buried beneath the collapsed section of Mark’s own backyard.”

Everyone stared.

“What?”

The officer nodded.

“He misread the property line.”

“He spent two days destroying your yard…”

“…while the box had been buried on his own property all along.”

Inside the rusted box weren’t gold coins or diamonds.

Instead…

There were dozens of handwritten journals.

Property deeds.

Letters.

Military records.

And a faded leather pouch containing several antique gold coins.

A local historian later confirmed the documents filled major gaps in the town’s history.

The collection eventually went to the county museum.

Because the box had been discovered on Mark’s property after police obtained a warrant…

…it became evidence.

Since he had fled the state, an arrest warrant was issued.

Three weeks later…

He was found living under a false name nearly eight hundred miles away.

He was arrested without incident.

Several months afterward, my insurance company paid to restore my backyard.

Fresh grass grew where the enormous hole had once been.

One afternoon, the town invited me to the museum.

A small plaque stood beside the restored journals.

It read:

“Recovered after an attempted theft that accidentally preserved an important piece of local history.”

I laughed.

After everything that happened…

That seemed strangely fitting.

Sometimes people dig enormous holes searching for treasure…

Only to discover they buried themselves instead.
