THE CEO HAD ONLY TWO DAYS LEFT TO LIVE.

Dr. Brooks didn’t speak right away when he walked into the room.

That alone made everyone uneasy.

He closed the door behind him and looked straight at Mrs. Carter.

“We need to talk.”

Ryan shifted slightly, but stayed quiet.

“What is it, doctor?” she asked, her voice tight.

Samuel placed a folder on the table.

“The water,” he said. “It’s contaminated. Not by accident.”

Silence fell heavy.

“What do you mean?” she whispered.

He opened the file.

“There are traces of industrial toxins. Rare ones. The kind used in water treatment… in very specific processes.”

Maria felt her chest tighten.

Mrs. Carter turned slowly toward Ryan.

“No,” she said. “No… that doesn’t make sense.”

But Samuel wasn’t done.

“There’s more. These toxins don’t act fast. They build up over time. Months. Sometimes years.”

Emily—no, Maria—looked at Daniel.

At his pale skin.

At the machines keeping him alive.

And suddenly, it all connected.

“He’s been poisoned,” Samuel said quietly.

The word hit like a hammer.

Mrs. Carter’s hand began to shake.

Ryan stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous,” he snapped. “You’re basing this on a bottle from the street?”

Samuel’s gaze hardened.

“No. I’m basing it on science.”

Then he added:

“And on your brother’s last words.”

That was it.

The room turned.

All eyes on Ryan.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he laughed.

Soft. Controlled.

“You really think I’d do something like that?”

No one answered.

Because now…

It didn’t sound impossible.

Mrs. Carter stood up slowly.

“Ryan…” she said, her voice breaking, “tell me the truth.”

Something shifted in his face.

The mask cracked—just for a second.

Enough.

“You don’t understand,” he said. “Everything he had… everything he built… it was supposed to be mine too.”

“So you killed him?” she whispered.

“I didn’t kill him,” Ryan shot back. “I just… made sure he wouldn’t last.”

Maria felt sick.

“You’ve been giving him small doses,” Samuel said. “Through his water. Controlled. Careful.”

Ryan didn’t deny it.

“I was tired of waiting,” he said flatly.

The room exploded.

Mrs. Carter collapsed into the chair, sobbing.

Security rushed in.

Ryan didn’t fight.

He just looked at Daniel one last time.

“You were never supposed to outlive me,” he muttered.

They took him away.

Just like that.

Gone.

But the damage remained.

Samuel moved quickly after that.

They changed Daniel’s treatment. Flushed his system. Adjusted everything.

It wasn’t a miracle.

It was timing.

Barely.

Days passed.

Then weeks.

And slowly…

Daniel opened his eyes again.

For real this time.

Maria was there.

Standing quietly near the door.

He looked at her for a long moment.

“You brought it,” he said weakly.

She nodded.

“You saved me.”

She shook her head.

“I just told the truth.”

Months later, Daniel stood outside that same hospital.

Stronger.

Alive.

And different.

The first thing he did wasn’t return to work.

It wasn’t reclaim his position.

It was fix what had been broken.

The water systems.

The neighborhoods.

The places people forgot.

Because for the first time…

He understood what it meant to almost lose everything.

And who it takes to bring you back.
