My husband left suddenly, without warning

The voice was venomous, laced with panic. I recognized it instantly—it was Livia.

Her words were broken by sobs, her fury dissolving into desperation. “They turned against me,” she cried. “Your in-laws, the same ones who defended me… they want nothing to do with me now. They say I ruined Lucian’s name. They’ve taken everything.”

I let the silence stretch. My heart no longer raced at the sound of her voice. I had expected this moment. I had prepared for it.

“Do you know what’s worse than losing everything, Livia?” I asked calmly. “It’s realizing that you never had it to begin with.”

She gasped, struggling for words. But I didn’t need to hear her excuses. I ended the call, placing the phone gently on the table, as though closing the final chapter of a book.

Elena appeared in the doorway, her expression wary. “Was it her?” she asked.
“Yes,” I replied. “But it’s over now.”

For the first time in months, her face softened. She stepped toward me, and without another word, she wrapped her arms around me. It wasn’t the embrace of a child seeking comfort, but of a young woman finally understanding.

In that moment, I realized we had won—not by clinging to an empire built on betrayal, but by freeing ourselves from it. The empire Lucian left behind was never truly ours. What we had now—our small business, our peace, our bond—was priceless.

I held my daughter close, feeling the warmth of her heartbeat against mine. Outside, the sun broke through the clouds, flooding the room with light.

For the first time since Lucian’s death, I felt whole again.
And I knew that the future, whatever it held, belonged to us.
